Procedure

Every adult Kenyan citizen has the right to exercise the right to vote as specified in Article 38 (3) of the Constitution in accordance with the Elections Act 2012.
The citizen shall exercise the right to vote if the citizen is registered in the Principal Register of Voters.
A person is only allowed to register once as a voter in a constituency or registration centre of his or her choice. It is an offence to register more than once.

Apply In-person
An eligible voter must present himself or herself to the registration officer with his/her original identification documents at the designated registration centre during working hours. This include;
(a). An original Identity Card
(b). An original Kenya Passport
(c). An acknowledgement of registration certificate
Here you will be given an Application for Registration form (Form A) to fill. You will assisted with the registration clerk to fill the form
The registration clerk will fill form A and ask you to verify if the details captured are correct.
The clerk will then capture your bio-data. This include your fingerprints and passport photo
After this you will be issued with a registration acknowledgement slip bearing the details.
Note: However, this slip will not be a requirement for voting.

Eligibility

Any citizen of Kenya who has attained the age of eighteen years as evidenced by either a national identity card or a Kenyan passport and whose name is not in the register of voters can be registered as a voter upon application.
A citizen who has attained the age of eighteen years and has registered for an identification card and is in the possession of an acknowledgement of registration certificate shall, upon application, be registered as a voter using the acknowledgement of registration certificate, but may only vote using an identification card.

The following persons are not eligible to vote;
When you are under 18 years of age
When you are not in possession of the original ID card or a valid Kenyan passport
When one is un-discharged bankrupt
When you have been found guilty by an election court or reported to be guilty of any election offence during the preceding five years.

Fees

The application is free of charge.

Validity

The validity period is forever until, where a voter wishes to transfer the voter’s registration to an electoral area other than the one the voter is registered in.

Application documents are provided by officials at the IEBC offices.
If a competent court declares you to be of unsound mind

The processing time is immediate.

Instructions

It gives you an opportunity to vote and elect leaders of your choice.
It allows you to vie for any elective position
It allows you to propose or second your preferred candidate for nomination
It gives you the right to nominate candidates for elections
It gives you moral authority to hold leaders accountable.

Information which might help

A person is only allowed to register once as a voter in a constituency or registration centre of his or her choice. It is an offence to register more than once.
Persons who have registered more than once are liable on conviction, to a fine not exceeding one hundred thousand Kenya shillings or imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year or both. Such persons shall be barred from participating in the immediate election and the next that follows.
A person may transfer as a voter to another registration centre of his or her choice within the registration period.

Other uses of the Document/Certificate

The document can also be used for identification purposes.

Updating of the Register of Voters
The Commission shall maintain an updated Register of Voters. For purposes of maintaining an updated register of voters, the Commission shall—
(i) regularly revise the Register of Voters;
(ii) update the Register of Voters by deleting the names of deceased voters and rectifying the particulars therein;
(iii) conduct a fresh voter registration, if necessary, at intervals of not less than eight years, and not more than twelve years, immediately after the Commission reviews the names and boundaries of the constituencies in accordance with Article 89(2) of the Constitution;
(iv) review the number, names and boundaries of wards whenever a review of the names and boundaries of counties necessitates a review; and
(v) revise the Register of Voters whenever county boundaries are altered in accordance with Article 94(3) of the Constitution.
