Need for the Document
A Veterinary Para-Professional is a person who is authorized by the Kenya Veterinary Board (KVB) to carry out certain designated tasks (dependent upon the category of Veterinary Para-Professional) in an area, and delegated to them under the responsibility and direction of a veterinarian.

The tasks for each category of Veterinary Para-Professional are defined by the Kenya Veterinary Board depending on qualifications and training, and according to need.

The following are cadres of veterinary para-professionals:

veterinary technologist is a veterinary para-professional who has attained an academic diploma certificate in animal health or a degree in animal health, in a course of study as approved by the Kenya Veterinary Board, but does not include a person with a degree in veterinary medicine;
veterinary technician is a veterinary para-professional who has attained an academic certificate in an animal health course of at least two years of study as approved by the Kenya Veterinary Board.

Information which might help
Several institutions in Kenya offer animal health courses leading to qualifications allowing for registration of veterinary paraprofessionals by The Kenya Veterinary Board.

It is important to confirm that the training institution is certified by The Kenya Veterinary Board.

One should contact these institutions directly for advice on courses offered and application procedure.

The Kenya Veterinary Board (KVB) as currently constituted is created by the new Veterinary Surgeons and Veterinary Para-professionals (VSVP) Act No. 29 of 2011 which was assented to by the President of the Republic of Kenya on 16th September 2011 and took effect on 2nd December 2011 after gazettement (Legal Notice No. 183 of 28-11-2011) by the Minister for Livestock Development. The Board was launched on 14th February 2012 in accordance with the provisions of Section 4 (1) of the VSVP Act.
