The Kenya Veterinary Board (KVB) as currently constituted is created by the new Veterinary Surgeons and Veterinary Para-professionals (VSVP) Act No. 29 of 2011 which was assented to by the President of the Republic of Kenya on 16th September 2011 and took effect on 2nd December 2011 after gazettement (Legal Notice No. 183 of 28-11-2011) by the Minister for Livestock Development. The Board was launched on 14th February 2012 in accordance with the provisions of Section 4 (1) of the VSVP Act. The VSVP Act, which now provides for registration of both Veterinary surgeons and Veterinary Para-professionals, replaced the almost 60 year old Veterinary Surgeons Act (Cap 366) of 1953, which provided for registration of Veterinary Surgeons only.

The Core functions of the Board are:-

Advise the Government on matters relating to veterinary training, research, practice and employment, the use of veterinary medicines, poisons and the pesticides and other issues relating to animal welfare;
Prescribe courses of training for veterinary surgeons and veterinary para-professionals;
Approve institutions for the training of veterinary surgeons and various categories of veterinary para-professionals;
Consider and approve the qualifications of the various categories of veterinary para-professionals for the purposes of registration.
Register, license, control and regulate veterinary practice and veterinary laboratories, clinics, animal hospitals and animal welfare institutions.
Formulate and publish a code of ethics for all registered persons;
Ensure the maintenance and improvement of the standards of practice by the registered persons;
Assess human resource and necessary training programs to guarantee sound and efficient veterinary service delivery and advise the relevant Ministries accordingly.
Create an inspectorate to work in collaboration with law enforcement agencies to locate, inspect, and close down premises or ambulatory clinics operated contrary to the practices prescribed in the Act, and take legal action against the offenders;
Regulate the use of technology for purposes of animal breeding.
