The Council of Governors (CoG) on Wednesday, April 1, revealed it has partnered with the Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) to distribute free hand sanitisers to the counties on a fortnight basis.
Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua had earlier directed the KPC to work together with private manufacturers to produce the alcohol-based sanitisers to be distributed to the public for free.
The CoG in a statement revealed that the distribution of the sanitisers, critical in the fight against Covid-19, would begin immediately.
"Following the agreement between the council and Kenya Pipeline Company Limited, for the supply of 20,000 litres of sanitisers per week, the council will with effect from today supply counties with sanitisers," the CoG statement reads in part.
Each county with confirmed Covid-19 cases will receive 520 litres per week.
Counties classified as high risk will receive 420 litres per week while all other counties will receive 400 litres per week.
The distribution will be reviewed on a 2-week basis to every county in the country as the government aims to curb the spread of Coronavirus.
The Ministry of Health had made the recommendation after retailers hiked prices of the commodity following the confirmation of the first Covid-19 case in Kenya.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) on Wednesday, April 1, confirmed the release of impounded ethanol to KPC.
"HE the President on 16th March 2020 requested that all ethanol held under any offences in the country be released to the Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) for manufacturing sanitisers for free distribution to the public to fight the #COVID19 pandemic," theODPP stated while confirming the release.
A consignment of ethanol which held at the Port of Mombasa and various Container Freight Stations (CFSs) was released for the same purpose.
The 18 containers with 396,000 litres of the product had been impounded over tax-related issues and smuggling.
