Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho has unveiled ten ventilators to help in the fight against Covid-19 donated by his friends from Dubai to residents of the county.
Addressing the media on Thursday, April 2, Joho informed that his office had written to friends in Dubai, appealing for help as the county was short on ventilators.
"We have a famous friend known in Mombasa by the name Ahmed Al Falasi. This gentleman won a programme supported by his highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid the ruler of Dubai, Prime Minister and Vice President of the United Arab Emirates, called the hope maker," Joho stated.
"Last week we made a call to the winner of hope maker appealing that we have a shortage of ventilators in the county," he added.
Joho on behalf of the country and the county of Mombasa expressed his gratitude at the generous donation, stating that his government was determined to combat the spread of the Covid-19 virus.
"I want to personally thank Ahmed Al Falasi and Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid for the initiative that gives the people of UAE more incentive to want to change lives and save people," Joho stated.
Doctor Iqbal Khan of the Coast General Hospital who addressed Kenyans stated that the machinery was state of the art and made in Germany.
Khan informed that the county had also purchased an additional eight ventilators of similar quality and adding to the existing twelve that were there initially, the county now has thirty ventilators.
He added that the county had set a target to establish, with the partnership of both public and private hospitals, a single 50 respiratory ventilator support system.
"Once any patient exhibits any form of respiratory distress, most common in the elderly, some kind of pneumonia and the lungs cannot breathe, they need to be put on ventilators," Khan stated.
The Mombasa governor urged residents of the county to join arms with the authorities and act in line with the given directives in the fight against the pandemic, stating that it was more of a collective effort if progress is to be achieved.
He pledged that the county would continue to do its best in taming the spread of the virus and coordinate with the national government in ensuring the safety of all Kenyans.
"We as a county will continue to do what we can both to support the people and to help implement the programmes issued by the national government and even those issued by our local committee here in Mombasa," Joho stated.
