A high-speed chase resulted in the death of one officer while another sustained serious injuries in Kirinyaga County.
The tragic accident occurred along the Makutano-Embu road in Kirinyaga County on the evening of Monday, April 7.
A report published by the Daily Nation on Tuesday, April 7, provided that officers involved in the pursuit were in search of a criminal accused of stealing a motorbike in the area.
John Onditi, the Mwea East Police boss provided that the officers had commissioned a Sienta taxi for the pursuit and it was speeding towards Embu when the accident occurred.
The driver of the vehicle lost control of the car after which it veered off the road, rolled several times and fell into a swamp at Difathas village.
The impact from the crash resulted in the DCI officer's decapitation, with the head thrown several metres from the scene of the accident.
Police who arrived at the accident scene searched for three hours before they recovered the officer's head.
Residents were visibly shaken by the accident and described it as the most horrific accident to happen in the region in the recent past.
"It is the worst accident ever reported in the area in recent times," stated one of the residents.
Irungu Mwangi, who rushed to the scene of the accident after hearing a loud bang described finding the headless body of the officer lying in a pool of blood.
Of the three in the Sienta taxi, only the DCI officer died with the driver of the taxi and the fellow officer escaping with injuries.
Onditi, however, stated that the investigations had started to establish the actual circumstances behind the gruesome accident.
Statistics from the National Transport and Safety Authority provide that 595 people had died from road crashes by March 4.
This was a marked increase from the same period in 2019 when 546 people died from the same cause.
