A Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) operation to recover guns and ammunition stolen from the armoury at Kibos Police Post in Kisumu led them to the home of an ex-convict in Emikwa village in Mumias West, Kakamega County on the night of Wednesday, April 8.
The armoury had been raided on Saturday, March 28 with the daring robbers making away with three guns including a G3 rifle, an MP5 rifle and an L1A1 rifle.
They also took two G3 magazines, two MP5 magazines and another 155 rounds of ammunition.
The MP5 rifle along with several rounds of ammunition was found at the ex-convict's home in Mumias, with the DCI claiming that he refused to surrender sparking a shoot-out that left him dead.
The slain suspect, 43 years old, had been serving a 20-year jail term for robbery with violence at Kodiaga GK Prison in Kisumu up until he was released on September 13, 2019, before completion of his full sentence.
The DCI revealed that he had been sentenced to death but appealed to a Kakamega Court which ruled in his favour.
Other than the rifle and ammunition, police also found 14 mobile phones at his home as well as several sim cards.
He was described as an accomplice of an earlier arrested suspect, a 19-year-old who was arrested on Thursday, April 2 in connection with the Kibos robbery.
The operation was led by officers from DCI Headquarters and their counterparts from DCI Mumias.
The 19-year-old was also accused by police of being involved in another robbery of Ksh230,000 from a mobile money agent operating in Daraja Mbili, Kisumu after the police post raid.
Acting on a tip-off from a female victim who was accosted by robbers with rifles, DCI raided the teenager's home where they found a G3 rifle wrapped in a sack.
He then led officers to the home of another of his alleged accomplices where officers found official police uniforms including three police jungle jackets and trousers, three jungle belts, three service colour belts, 2 berets, a police manual, a pair of military boots and a television set.
The DCI claimed that the items had been stolen from the house of an Inspector of Police on March 10.
Police had previously disclosed that the suspected robbers took advantage of heavy downpour experienced in Kibos on Saturday, March 28 to raid the police post at around 11.30 PM.
According to a police report, the officer who was on duty had briefly gone to his home only to return to find the steel door leading to the armoury wide open.
Efforts to involve officers from Miwani Police Station in combing a nearby sugar plantation in search of the robbers was also hampered by the heavy rains.
