Dozens of revelers also arrested as government cracks whip on Covid-19 directives flouters

Some 15 bars in Makueni county have been shut for flouting government regulations aimed at mitigating spread of the Covid-19 virus.

At the same time, more than 50 operators and revelers have also been arrested in the area for ignoring the social distancing directive.

Speaking to the media at Mtito Andei, County Commissioner Mohammed Maalim warned bar operators found breaking the directive would face the full force of the law.

Mohammed, however, regretted that some security officers were breaking the very law they are tasked with enforcing. He said any police officers caught contravening the law would be prosecuted and ultimately sacked.

“Wote, Makindu, Kilala, Kee and Kyambalasi are some of the notorious spots where bars have been operating illegally and where we have arrested the biggest number,” he said.

At the same time, the county boss appealed to residents to continue wearing face masks in public places to avoid confrontation with the law.

“As good citizens, obey the law and if you have no pressing issues to attend to please stay at home,” he said.

He said 7,450 people have been tested for Covid-19 symptoms since Thursday last week, on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.

“As a government, we are pleased with the work of the multi-agency team involving security, medics and national government administrators,” he said.
