Kilifi Deputy Governor Gideon Saburi was on Thursday charged before a Mombasa court with wilfully spreading the novel Coronavirus by going out in public without taking precautions, an accusation he denied.
Saburi was arrested on Friday after completing a 14-day government-enforced quarantine after the health ministry said he had tested positive for the Covid-19.
“Gideon Saburi … within Kilifi County … while suffering from an infectious disease, namely Covid-19, wilfully and unlawfully, without taking any precaution, exposed yourself to the public,” the charge sheet read.
Saburi denied the charge and was remanded until April 15 when his application for bail will be heard.
The leader is said to have ignored pleas to quarantine after arriving into the country from Germany, one of the countries hard hit by the pandemic.
This came as Kenya recorded five more cases of the Covid-19 disease, raising its total number to 184.
In the daily update by Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe, the government said three of the new patients are Kenyans.
Three of the five from 308 samples tested were recorded in Nairobi and the others in Mombasa, he said, adding only one of the patients had been in quarantine. The number of recoveries stood at 12 while a patient was reported to have died in Mombasa, raising Kenya's death toll to seven.
Three of the five new patients are male while two are female.
Of the 184 cases, Kagwe said three are below 15 years in age, 49 in the age 15-29 group, 119 in the age 30-59 group and 13 above age 60.
Some 107 of them are male while 77 are female.
The Covid-19 disease has killed at least 89,418 people worldwide since it was first reported in Wuhan, China, on December 31, 2019.
At least 1,529,640 infections and 337,210 recoveries have been reported globally, according to Worldometer's count on Thursday.
