He played for Hvidovre from 1984 to 1987, Brondby from 1987 to 1991, Manchester United from 1991 to 1999, Sporting CP from 1999 to 2001, Aston Villa from 2001 to 2002, and Manchester City from 2002 to 2003. Schmeichel also represented Denmark in international competition from 1987 to 2001. He was named IFFHS World's Best Goalkeeper in both 1992 and 1993.
