Health CAS Mercy Mwangangi on Wednesday, July 8, was the toast of the town as top officials from the Ministry of Health (MoH) visited Makueni County.
While addressing health workers during his briefing, Health Cabinet Secretary (CS) Mutahi Kagwe placed CAS Mwangangi on the spot by daring her to prove that she was indeed a Kamba native, leading to loud cheers from the crowd.
"Mwĩ aseo?, (How are you)," the CAS asked in her distinct native tongue, "Ĩĩ twĩ aseo (yes we are well)," the health workers cheerfully responded.
However, she left it at that and stepped off the stage leaving CS Kagwe in fits of laughter and asking for a little more.He was in a cheerful mood as he went on to introduce his teams before proceeding to launch various health projects in Makueni County.
The Health CS was also glad to announce that the County Government of Makueni had achieved the 300-bed isolation capacity in line with the directive by the President.
"Currently, 257 healthcare workers have fallen victim to this virus. Four out this number are from Makueni County, want to thank all the healthcare workers for putting their lives at risk, as they manage our patients; There can never be a higher level of individual sacrifice than this," CS Kagwe stated during his address.
Currently, CAS Mwangangi's mother, Dr Florence Muoti Mwangangi, 57, serves as the Speaker of the County Assembly of Machakos, under Governor Alfred Mutua.
Mwangangi was born in Machakos in 1986, attended Pangani Girls High School before proceeding to the University of Nairobi where she pursued Medicine.
After that, the soft-spoken doctor was enrolled in an internship programme at the Machakos Level Five Hospital for one year, where she would get thrust into the challenging life of a health worker, sometimes pulling 48-hour shifts.
Uknown to most, the outspoken CAS was part of the team that was tasked with turning the Universal Healthcare (UHC) agenda into an actionable plan.
Prior to her nomination to the Health docket, Mwangangi confessed, while speaking to KTN News, to have been contemplating over three job offers the night before, only for a fourth offer to come in straight from the President's office, 'you never say no to the president,' she stated.
