The University of Nairobi (UoN) on July 10, announced the institution would proceed with its 2020 graduation plans amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
The institution's Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Stephen Kiama in an address to the University community, stated that there were plans to re-open in phases in line with the directive by Education CS George Magoha to resume tertiary learning in September 2020.
“In line with the government directives, I have instructed the Deans and Directors working closely with the respective Principals to prepare to open in a phased manner.
"In addition, no student scheduled to graduate this year should fail to do so because of Covid-19," he stated.

The Vice-Chancellor revealed that the ad-hoc committee for COVID-19 which had been advising on emerging issues of the pandemic will assess each faculty when ready to admit students and make appropriate recommendations.
“All guidelines issued by government must be complied with before making the request to have campus-based exams or teaching and learning,” he stated.
Prof. Kiama added that even as the University gradually reopened for on-campus learning, the institution would continue to offer most of the lessons online through platforms used in the past three months.
He advised students to continue engaging their heads of departments and sit for the exams when scheduled.
The Vice-chancellor further stated that the reporting dates of the incoming class would be announced as he stated that admission of new students was continuous through the online admission system.
In regards to the election of Student leaders, Prof. Kiama announced that the Senate had set up a committee to review the election guidelines and would propose on how elections would be conducted in the face of the pandemic.
“This committee is chaired by Prof. Fred Jonyo, the Chairman, Political Science Department and deputized by Prof. Winnie Kamau, former Chairman Department of Private Law. You are all called upon to give your views to the committee," he explained.
On July 7, CS Magoha directed that TVETS and colleges reopen in September 2020 but with strict adherence to Covid-19 regulations.
During the pandemic, UoN has strived to ensure learning proceeds without major disruptions. In May 2020, the institution became the first public university to conduct virtual examinations.
