Two police officers were arrested on Sunday, October 25, in Likuyani, Kakamega county in connection with the suspected murder of Denis Lusava.
Lusava was arrested on Wednesday, October 7 for allegedly failing to wear a face mask but according to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspect was arrested for assaulting a police officer.
After his arrest, Lusava was released on a free bond at 12.40 pm pending the filing of a P3 form.
He, however, went missing shortly after, and his lifeless body was later discovered in River Nzoia.
A statement from DCI confirmed the arrest of the two police officers after an autopsy of the suspect indicated possible homicide.
"Two police officers based at Mbururu Police Post, Kakamega County have been arrested by DCI Homicide detectives in the ongoing investigations into the suspected murder of Dennis Lusava.
"Their arrest follows the body's discovery, examination and autopsy report which suggested a possible homicide before the victim's body was dumped into River Nzoia. Both in our custody for investigative interviewing," read the statement.
Lusava's mother went to the base on Sunday and reported that her son never went home after being released, after which she was referred to the OCS Matunda Police Station for further assistance.
Acting upon the report, the OCS went ahead to the patrol base where he found the rowdy mob of about 200 people who started a protest after learning Lusava had gone missing. His attempt to make an address was unsuccessful.
The rowdy mob hurled stones at the OCS leaving him with serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital. The mob proceeded to torch the patrol base and damaging a police motor vehicle.
The officers sought reinforcement from Administration Police officers, DCI and GSU officers from Mt. Elgon who managed to restore order in the area. Eighteen suspects were arrested in connection with the incident.
According to reports, the suspect was tortured by police officers with five anti-riot clubs and two electricity cables believed to clobber the suspect recovered in the cell.
