The two were among the five heroes who were appointed to the council by Sports CS Amina Mohamed. They were appointed alongside former Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) Secretary-General Adan Wachu and former Juja MP Gitu wa Kahengeri.

"I have this morning presided over the swearing-in ceremonies for the Registrar of Political Parties and two Asst. Registrars, as well as members of the new National Heroes Council.
"I wish the new officials well in their respective assignments," stated Maraga in a statement.

Kipchoge is hailed as an international record-breaking athlete with his notable milestone being a time he ran a 42-kilometer race in under 2 hours in Vienna, Austria.

National Heroes Council

Heroes Council is a fairly new entity created through the National Heroes Act 2014 to identify and appreciate heroes in the country.

Ambassador Yvonne Khamati was appointed in July by CS Mohammed to serve as the council's CEO.

Since the act was put in place in 2014, some 600 heroes and heroines have been honoured countrywide for exemplary service to the nation.

The fields include academia, human rights, arts, liberation, sports, philanthropy, conservation, peace-making and entrepreneurship among others.

The council is mandated with originating policy relating to heroes, establishing and overseeing the management of a national heroes square, design of appropriate commemorative items, among others.

Tabichi achievements

Tabichi won the prestigious 2019 Global Teacher Prize in March 2019 and bagged a Ksh100 million reward.

The mathematics and physics teacher at Keriko Secondary School in Nakuru was the first African to ever win the prize.

The Varkey Foundation website, which runs the annual prize, commended the teacher for his hard work and dedication.

“His dedication, hard work and passionate belief in his student’s talent has led his poorly-resourced school in remote rural Kenya to emerge victorious after taking the Country’s best schools in national science competitions,” wrote the foundation.
