Who is Yuen Woo-ping, the Hong Kong kung fu master behind The Matrix, Kill Bill by Kenyans247(1): Mon 07, December, 2020 09:46am |
Working with greats like Jet Li, John Woo and Jackie Chan, the 75-year-old’s career has been filled with eye-popping action both in Hollywood and Hong Kong, with Yuen’s martial arts choreography on The Matrix trilogy raising the bar for fight scenes forevermoreThe list of Hong Kong cinema’s best and brightest who went to Hollywood is a long one. Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Chow Yun-fat, John Woo and Michelle Yeoh are just some of the stars who tried their luck in America. However, with the possible exception of Chan, none have enjoyed as much success as Yuen Woo-ping.
Primarily an action choreographer, Yuen has worked on some of the biggest films in modern Hollywood history. His work on The Matrix reinvented action cinema; he brought to life Quentin Tarantino’s “roaring rampage of revenge”, Kill Bill; and the sword fights he helped put together for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon brought wuxia to the West. The film remains the only Chinese-language film to have won the Academy Award for best international feature film. His Hong Kong work has been equally important. Yuen worked on kung fu classics Drunken Master and The Magnificent Butcher, while his later work on Tiger Cage 2 and Iron Monkey helped them rank among the best action films of the 90s. In 2004 he worked alongside Stephen Chow on Kung Fu Hustle, a feature that became, at the time, the highest-grossing film in Hong Kong box office history. More recently, he was selected by auteur Wong Kar-wai to direct the action for The Grandmaster, which won a record 12 gongs at the Hong Kong Film Awards. https://www.scmp.com/magazines/style/celebrity/article/3090185/who-yuen-woo-ping-hong-kong-kung-fu-master-behind-matrix 0 Shares 0 Like • |
