|Matatu Ban: NMS Postpones Exercise After Facing Setback by Kenyans247(1): Tue 15, December, 2020 09:29am|
The Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) has postponed the order which directed banning PSV's from accessing the Central Business District (CBD).
The agency under General Mohamed Badi was set to relocate matatus to termini outside CBD on Monday, December 14.
On the same day, it announced that it had shelved the plans until January 2021 with new dates to be announced later on.
NMS said that it was unable to complete the construction of new bus termini within the stipulated time frame.
This is the second time the agency has been forced to postpone the exercise. Before settling for December 14, NMS had planned to kick out matatus on December 1.
The termini are key to the relocation plan, with the green park terminus at Railways club expected to host over 110 matatus plying Ngong Road and Lang'ata Road (Kawangware, Kikuyu, Kibera, Lang'ata, Rongai, Kiserian).
Other termini include the Fig Tree Terminus at Ngara expected to serve matatus from Waiyaki Way, Uhuru Highway, Kipande and Limuru roads.
A terminus at the junction of Bunyala and Workshop Road is under construction and will serve PSVs from Mombasa Road (South B, South C, Industrial Area, Imara Daima, Athi River, Kitengela, Machakos). The Muthurwa Terminus is expected to remain as is to serves PSVs from Jogoo and Lusaka roads.
The Badi led team announced that buses will be availed to ferry commuters from the Green Park Terminus situated at Railways Club along Haile Selassie Avenue to CBD. Commuters were also asked to use dedicated cycleways and walkways to move to and from CBD and the bus termini.
To facilitate smooth movement of vehicles, NMS added that it would unveil a mobile app that will restrict the flow of matatus in the Central Business District (CBD).
The app will only allow a handful of matatus into the CBD to reduce congestion in various pickup points.
