Stealing ideas from readers

I refer to Leslie Kipkemboi’s letter, featured in your article “Will the editor steal my story idea? Contributors speak out their fears” (Daily Nation, December 11, 2020). I’m afraid your response did not assure us that the editors do not lift and divert to feature articles ideas from pieces submitted by readers.

You point out that one may not be the only person who could have thought of the idea. That was the same response you gave me a year ago when I complained of editors shunning my letters only to run the subject matter later as a feature. Once could be coincidence.

But five times, as happened to my articles, is not a coincidence. At the fifth time they gave me credit somewhere in the depth of the feature. Lifting readers’ ideas without acknowledging them is demoralising to budding writers. The Nation should discourage the habit.

Public editor compromised

Mr Mwaura, it is evident from your reply, “A tale of Nanyuki railway map and why the ‘Nation’ killed the story” (Daily Nation, December 4, 2020) that you were compromised. You did not exert the authority bestowed upon you as a news ombudsman to bring pressure on the editor to give compelling reasons for the delay in correcting the story.

Log-in challenges and errors

With the recent changes to your online newspaper portal, one is always either dealing with log-in challenges and errors or having to play around with different browsers to look for a solution to the many errors and prompts to log in to the portal to read news. A lot of users’ time is wasted this way. One of the most common errors and messages one has to deal with are “Oops. We’re sorry, we couldn’t load the article. We have been notified. Please reload the page or try again later.”
