Former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero's interest in the Homa Bay Gubernatorial seat in 2022 has elicited mixed reactions from Kenyans.
Kidero made the official announcement during a prayer service at Agoro Sare Seventh Day Adventist Church in Oyugis Town, Homa Bay County.
The politician pitched camp in the county from Thursday, January 7, and met various groups in the county, as he sought to kick-start his 2022 campaign. He expressed his ambitions to serve people in his rural home as he seeks to succeed the incumbent governor Cyprian Awiti.
Pointing out key issues affecting the county, such as unemployment and health sector woes, Kidero noted that he was equal to the task.
A section of Netizens though, took to social media to criticize the former Nairobi governor's move.
"I could hear the residents of Homa Bay as his motorcade was passing telling him to go back to Nairobi!
“Kenyans should stop this and shouldn't entertain rejects.
"The audacity of the likes of Waititu, Sonko, Kidero and a few others who have been sanctioned before on corruption matters, appearing to make a comeback, shows how we Kenyans are "carried" as fools by our leaders," some of the comments read.
However, other Kenyans felt that Kidero was up to the task.
"I fully support his bid because our current situation in Homa Bay is clear that we need an experienced person with management skill not dancing skills.
“We the people of Homa Bay know the kind of bad leadership we have suffered since the inception of devolution. Dr Evans Kidero is our choice.
“He will definitely have a landslide victory," other comments read.
Kidero served as CEO of Mumias Sugar Company for 8 years before resigning in 2012 to join politics.
He secured the Nairobi Governor seat during the 2013 general elections on an ODM ticket. Kidero only served one term as he was defeated by Mike Sonko in the 2017 General elections.
His term was however surrounded by a myriad by graft charges and abuse of office, which led to further probe by the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC).
