Retired Maraga Campaigns For Uhuru's Impeachment by Kenyans247(1): Fri 15, January, 2021 09:21am
Retired Chief Justice David Maraga has once again called for the impeachment of President Uhuru Kenyatta for violating the Constitution and frustrating the Judiciary.

In an interview with Citizen TV's Editorial Director Joe Ageyo, on Thursday, January 14, Maraga argued that Kenyatta should have been removed from office a while before.

The former CJ said that the head of state intentionally declined to appoint 41 judges recommended by the Judiciary despite three explicit court orders on the same.

The retired judge added that budget cuts affected Judiciary as it could no execute its roles efficiently.
"The President has a constitutional duty to appoint judges but he has not done so because there are issues which have not been revealed.

"As far as I am concerned, the President has violated his constitutional duty. If it was in other countries, he would be impeached," he said.

According to Maraga, the Parliament of Kenya should be held liable for encouraging Kenyatta to abuse office. The former Supreme Court President added that MPs still had time to amend the mistake and could kick Kenyatta out of office.

He called on Kenyans to pressure their MPs to impeach the head of state for betraying the oath he had sworn to protect the constitution.

"I believe there is a provision for which Parliament if it wanted to, can use to impeach the President so that everybody is held accountable. If Kenyans want the rule of law to be upheld, they should tell their MPs to impeach him," he added.

Maraga recalled that he used to pray for his safety and also take precautions after he crossed paths with Kenyatta in 2017. The former CJ annulled the President's victory in the 2017 General Election and called for a repeat election.

This was after ODM leader Raila Odinga successfully proved that the elections were marred with voter fraud and other illegalities.

In a separate interview with KTN News, Maraga recalled that he used to receive secret and threatening calls but did not abscond his duties that he vowed to undertake upon being sworn into office.

He also spoke on his next plans after retiring from office on Monday, January 11, 2021. Maraga stated that he was still able to perform to serve Kenyans in public office and would welcome any new appointment.

"It doesn't have to be a political office. Not everyone can be a politician. However, I also want to enjoy my rest. I have never taken a break since I became CJ and I will sleep and enjoy my time off," Maraga said.
