What is Meningitis? by Annaroy(2): Mon 09, August, 2021
Meningitis is a condition where the membranes surrounding the brain are damaged. Due to the spread of infection, there is swelling in the spinal cord.

Meningitis can be bacterial, viral, or even a fungal infection. If not treated on time it can cause life-threatening.

However, meningitis can occur for many different reasons. The most life-threatening and serious condition of meningitis is caused by bacteria that travel through the bloodstream and become trapped in the brain or spinal cord.

This in turn causes inflammation of the meninges. The meninges are the thin membrane that covers the brain and spinal cord.

Bacteria can enter the bloodstream and affect the meninges if there is a skull fracture or sinus infection. Bacteria that cause meningitis include Streptococcus pneumonia, Haemophilus influenza, Neisseria meningitides, and Listeria monocytogenes.

The milder form of meningitis is a viral infection that can be cured in about two weeks' time. Common viruses that cause meningitis are the La Crosse virus, West Nile virus, and herpes simplex virus.

Fungal meningitis is an uncommon form of meningitis. Here patients already suffering from conditions like low immunity or AIDS contract it. This condition is known as cryptococcal meningitis and if not treated in time, it can be life-threatening.
