Baringo County is located in the former Rift Valley province of Kenya. It approximately covers an area of 11, 075 square kilometres. The county’s largest town and headquarters is Kabarnet. The County Government is headed by Governor Stanley Kiptis.
Here is a list of 10 best places to visit in Baringo County.
1. Lake Bogoria National Reserve
The reserve covers an area of 107 square kilometres, with 34 square kilometres being covered by water. It is home to a variety of wild animals like the greater kudu, impalas, gazelles, the Burchell’s zebra, warthogs, hyenas, dik-dik and vervet monkeys. Flamingoes, different bird species and hot springs can also be found at the reserve. The reserve offers an enabling environment for camping, bird watching activities, game watching, nature walking and boat riding.
2. Lake Baringo
It is one of the two freshwater lakes found in the Great Rift Valley. It boasts of over 100 species of birds, thus making it a perfect haven for bird lovers. The Lake is also home to hippos, crocodiles, different species of bats and amphibians. One can also visit the islands found in Lake Baringo, the notable one being Ol Kokwe Island. Other activities to engage in at the Lake include fishing, boat riding and water sports such as windsurfing.
3. Kabarnet Museum
The museum was officially opened in 1996. It is located in Kabarnet town. It features four main public galleries that display the cultural artefacts and exhibits of the Rift Valley people, in particular, the Keiyo/Marakwet, Samburu, Pokot, Nandi and Kipsigis.
4. Lake Baringo Reptile Park
The park was officially opened in 2003. It is home to different species of reptiles such as snakes, monitor lizards, crocodiles, turtles and tortoises. It is actually a perfect park for viewing different kinds of reptiles found in Kenya.
5. Lake Bogoria
The Lake is within the Lake Bogoria National Reserve. It is commonly referred to as the ‘pink lake’, due to a large number of flamingoes it attracts. The main attractions at the lake are the hot geysers and springs, where you can boil eggs and even roast maize.

6. Lake Kamnarok Game Reserve
Lake Kamnarok is an oxbow lake with the second largest population of crocodiles in Africa, after Lake Chad. The Lake is found within the Lake Kamnarok Game Reserve. The reserve is also home to giraffes, elephants, buffaloes, waterbucks, warthogs, dik-dik and various water birds. The reserve is located in Kerio Valley, next to Lake Bogoria.
7. Kerubo Swamp
The swamp is located at the northern end of Lake Bogoria. It is mainly known for its birdlife, thus making it the best place in Baringo County for bird watching activities. Over 200 species of birds can be found at the swamp.
8. Ruko Conservancy
It is located on the shores of Lake Baringo. It was founded by the local communities in Baringo County but is managed by the KWS. Giraffes, kudus, baboons, hippos and impalas and different species of birds can be found at the conservancy. It is suitable for bird watching, game viewing activities and nature walks.
9. Kaptuya Conservancy
The Conservancy is also a project of both the local communities in Baringo and the Kenya Wildlife Service. Elephants are the main wild species at the conservancy.
10. Dr.Richard Leakey’s Snake Park
It is situated on the shores of Lake Baringo. It is a viewing park for different species of snakes found in Baringo County.
