Kenya Utalii College
Kenya’s hospitality industry enjoys a long and rich history. It began in the 1900s with the arrival of a wave of aristocratic visitors who were drawn to Kenya by the abundance of her wildlife. A number of palatial hotels were built to accommodate them, but such was the calibre of the guests that an unprecedented level of excellence, both in cuisine and service, was called for. And it was in rising to the challenge of providing such high-profile accommodation that Kenya’s historic reputation as a
world-class destination was founded.

Reputations, however, must not only be maintained but also continually perfected. Thus, in 1975, the Kenyan Government established the Kenya Utalii College (KUC).

To-date, Kenya Utalii College has trained over 60,000 tourism sector graduates (representing 20 per cent of the industry’s work force) many of whom also hold high-profile positions internationally. KUC is a proud member of the African EUHOFA (International Association of Hotel Schools) and hosted their International Congress in 1996 and 2016. Kenya Utalii College is an affiliate member of the United Nations World Tourism Organization and is East and Sub-Saharan Africa’s only Japanese Proficiency Language Test (JPLT) Examination Centre.

Kenya Utalii College is the Secretariat for Africa’s only Association of Hospitality and Tourism Schools, whose membership numbers over 27 facilities from over 15 countries. Kenya Utalii College is also an accredited East African Legislative Assembly Centre of Excellence in hospitality and tourism training.

Kenya Utalii College collaborates with the University of Nairobi in the provision of Bachelor of Arts in Hospitality Management and in Travel and Tourism Management, both of which are aligned to Kenya’s Vision 2030 economic development blueprint.

Kenya Utalii College is also poised to commence a range of e-learning courses. With four campuses, located in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu, KUC is strategically positioned to offer both three-year Diploma Courses in hotel management and travel and tourism enterprises and a number of shorter customized courses in technical and specialized skills.

KUC’s excellence has been recognized by numerous organizations to include the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the Young Chef Olympiad competition.

Allied to Kenya Utalii College is the Utalii Hotel which trains college students across the spectrum of hotel disciplines (front office, housekeeping, laundry, food and beverage sales and food production). Showcasing 57 rooms, two internationally-styled restaurants, two bars, and an ultra-modern gym and spa, this highly-regarded luxury hotel, set in serene and verdant grounds, also features a state-of-the-art conference and banqueting suite that attracts a wide range of corporate and social events.

In Kenya, we are passionate about our hospitality. Utalii College is where this passion is nurtured.

Kenya Utalii College Courses Background
Kenya Utalii College is the Secretariat for Africa’s only Association of Hospitality and Tourism Schools (AHTSA) which has a membership of more than 27 Hospitality schools drawn from over 15 countries. It is also an East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) accredited Center of Excellence in Hospitality and Tourism training.

Kenya Utalii College is renowned for providing world class training for the Hospitality and Tourism industry both locally and internationally. One of the strategies we have put in place is collaboration with other reputable training institutions, both local and international, to help us deliver our mandate: Training for the Hospitality and Tourism industry.

Kenya Utalii College include some of the world’s best Hospitality and Tourism training institutions such as the Manchester Metropolitan University, UK, Makerere University, Uganda and Dr. Livingstone International University of Tourism Excellence & Business Management (LIUTEBM), Zambia. Locally the College has partnered with one of the leading public Universities, University of Nairobi, in offering two degree programs; Bachelor of Arts in Hospitality Management and Bachelor of Arts in Travel and Tourism Management. The two programmes have boosted the provision of quality training in the Hospitality and Tourism industry. They have attracted scores of new entrants with interest for professional training in the Hospitality and Tourism industry. In order to meet the ever growing demand, the College is preparing itself to start offering e-learning in the near future.

Increased linkages between Kenya Utalii College and the Hospitality and Tourism industry stakeholders has seen most KUC graduates get internships and jobs in leading establishments within the industry. The institution is closely linked to the industry through the Tourism industry/Kenya Utalii College Liaison Committee. Some of the institution’s alumni have secured jobs internationally, regionally and locally- a move that re-affirms Kenya Utalii College’s position as a market leader in Hospitality and Tourism training in Africa.

Utalii receives the first batch of Zambian hospitality students on Presidential Scholarships
The Kenya Utalii College has received the first batch of 26 foreign students from Zambia. The students are on a full presidential scholarship announced by President Uhuru Kenyatta. The second batch of 24 students will join Africa’s premier hospitality training institution next September, to make the total number of Zambians hospitality students on a presidential scholarship at the institution 50.

Reported to collegeUtalii CEO and principal Hashim Mohamed on Monday told The Standard the 26 had reported at the Ruaraka-based main campus in Nairobi.“We have already admitted them and they have settled down well. They reported in September,” said Mr. Mohamed. He said two of the students had been enrolled in hotel management and seven in travel and tourism management diploma courses set to last three years. Others will study travel operations (two), tour guiding and administration (three), front office operations (two), food production (two), housekeeping and laundry (four) food, beverages service and sales (four).

The agreement was reached between President Kenyatta and his Zambian counterpart Edgar Lungu last year. During his Kenyan visit, President Lungu and Uhuru focused on how to enhance bilateral ties and increase cooperation in sectors including tourism, transport, trade, investment, air link, and regional security. Kenya and Zambia have an existing agreement on science, technology, and innovation. Uhuru visited Zambia in 2014.
