Cases of thieves getting stuck in places where they strike for theft missions have been widespread. Residents of Kisii had, however, not encountered such until recently when thieves attacked Francis Machoka's farm. Thieves raided Machoka's farm during the night and tried to steal banana's but were overpowered by a herbalist's protection spell. Photo: UGC. The farmer is a university graduate and he had for about two years tried to secure a job from the government but all his efforts we to no avail. His only option was to invest in farming on a small piece of land his parents offered him in a move to sustain his financial needs. For five years, he had practised farming, he had managed to establish himself as a local supplier of a variety of vegetables in his village. The theft incidents had, however, turned him in a watchman on his farm but whenever he could keep vigil he could arrest no one. He tried reporting the incident to the area chief but the thieves go more cunning and were able to dodge the authorities.
Two months ago, robbers raided his farm and stole his motorcycle, water pump and irrigation pipes. Because he was fed up with the way thieves were targeting his belongings, he decided to visit Sheikh Shaban, a native healer and doctor, whom he was informed had powers to net the thieves terrorising him. Last month, Dr Shaban visited Machoka's farm and installed anti-theft charms.

The medicine man told him to wait for at least two weeks and anyone who made an attempt to steal from his farm will be taught a lesson. Last week at around 10pm, Machoka went to his farm to pick a machete he had forgotten to take to the store after he finished trimming a hedge. He was, however, shocked to find two grown men wailing in pain in his banana yard. Each of them held a sack filled with raw bananas they had stollen. They claimed that they were unable to move and were experiencing excruciating pain.

Machoka called in neighbours and the duo was beaten like stray dogs. They confessed that they were the ones that had earlier stolen from the farmer and pledged to return the motorbike, pipes and pump, Machoka called Daktari Shaban and the thieves were set free. After returning the goodies, they were arrested by local police and taken in protective custody. Apart from catching thieves, Shaban also helps in winning business tenders, finding lost items and catching cheating spouses.
