An inversion is when a candidate loses popular vote but wins the electoral college.
US has had four inversions since 1824. That's in 1876, 1888, 2000 and 2016. All of them favoured Republicans.
The probability of an inversion occurring depends on the margin of votes. The smaller the margin , the more an inversion is likely to occur.
Researchers believe that Trump is likely to lose popular vote by as many as 5,000, 000 votes but still make it to the White House through the electoral college.
He is set to win in the key states by riding on the support of semi educated white voters.
This key segment of voters had initially belonged to Democrats, but it shifted after Republicans began recruiting voters from white Southerners who had been alienated by the civil rights movement.
