- Kivutha Kibwana is on his way out as Wiper party chairman - Former CS Chirau Ali Makwere is the preferred replacement - Kalonzo and Kivutha despite belonging to the same party have previously clashed over the interests of the larger Ukambani region Former Cabinet secretary Chirau Ali Makwere is set to take over as chairman of the Wiper party amid an impending exit by Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana. With major changes in the umbrella party set to be announced from mid July 2019, Makwere, who ditched Jubilee party in 2017, is expected to be unveiled as the Kalonzo-led party’s new chair. Wiper Party Chief Whip Robert Mbui confirmed that indeed Kibwana would be exiting the seat, although he expressed Wiper’s willingness to keep him as an ordinary member. Despite an olive branch having been extended to the Makueni governor by the party, it is unlikely his relationship with Kalonzo will be the same. The two have been in some sort of supremacy battle for the larger Kamba region politics, with the governor constantly going on record to fault his boss over an alleged poor track record. A bold Kibwana at one point went ahead to dare Kalonzo to sack him as chair, saying he can no longer be in an abusive political marriage. If indeed he leaves Wiper, the 65-year-old governor will have two options: to reignite his Muungano party or join another ship as the 2022 political realignments continue.
