Kisumu governor Peter Anyang' Nyong'o has appealed to Safaricom to build a cancer centre in honour of its late CEO Robert (Bob) Collymore who succumbed to leukemia on Monday, July 1. The county chief suggested the oncology centre to be dedicated to Collymore should be set up in one of the leading local universities. ''We have few of these special doctors in the country. That is why a lot of time we have to seek for medication or specialised treatment abroad,'' said Nyong'o, himself a cancer warrior having been diagnosed with prostate cancer in July 2010. ''Let it champion at every level of public healthcare cancer screening and diagnosis so that this 'Emperor of all Maladies' is identified early to make treatment more feasible," he said. Nyong'o revealed Collymore was very instrumental in the operations of Africa Cancer Foundation (ACF), a Nairobi-based charitable trust launched in July 2011 to create awareness on the prevention, management and treatment of cancer in Africa.
