Should we visit South Africa or Tanzania in August? by Kenyans247(1): Sun Jan 2020 03:38pm
I’m from South Africa and I’ve travelled extensively in both my home country and East Africa.

After studying for 4 years in the US, I can say with fairly high certainty that most Americans without travel experience in developing countries would find anything outside of South Africa’s biggest urban centers incredibly frustrating. The US is jam-packed with amenities and luxuries that are often unnoticed by its citizens: things like a working public transit system (sort of), English pretty much everywhere, incredibly efficient customer-oriented businesses everywhere, good infrastructure, rule of law to a large degree, and a government that mostly acts in the best interests of its people. I recently went on a spring break trip to Mexico with some of my American classmates and we all absolutely loved it, but they were at times a little bit underprepared to deal with the challenges of traveling in a developing country.

And when it comes to the startup scene, South Africa is pretty much the only country in Africa you want to be looking at. This is not to say that other African countries lack tech companies, it’s just that the most noteworthy tech companies outside of South Africa tend to be part of large conglomerates, such as AIG. Sure they’re innovative, but saying they’re part of a “startup scene” is maybe pushing it.

Go to Cape Town: it’s lovely in August and has a lot to see and do. Besides, where else in Africa will you find a place like Workshop17 ?!

I would also recommend going in the Karoo if you’re going to be in Cape Town - it’s absolutely fascinating! Definitely do some research on the Karoo; there’s really no place in the world quite like it!
