Tanzania has a well-maintained road that runs from Arusha in the north to Mbeya in the south, making it easy to travel over quite a bit of the country. Most of the other roads are pretty miserable for long bus rides, so be wary of that.

Tanzania is a beautiful country and there are lots of affordable, fun things to do if you don't want to pay the exorbitant fees for the national parks and Kilimanjaro. Arusha has some great foothills for hiking at the base of Mt. Meru (the views are unforgettable). The beaches in Tanga are incredibly beautiful and peaceful. Iringa and Mbeya in the south are just all-around pleasant towns and a nice place to explore for a day or two. And all along the way, the people are friendly and helpful and the food is delicious.
