Procedure

This should be done at least three (3) months before the expiry of the permit

Apply in person

You can apply for a research extension by filling in an Application for Authority for Extension of Research In Kenya Form C. http://www.mpala.org/documents/Research_Permits_2_1014121714.pdf This form can be obtained from your affiliate institution or you can download it through this link Form C. http://www.mpala.org/documents/Research_Permits_2_1014121714.pdf
Fill in the application form and send the completed research extension Form C to the affiliating institution for endorsement. This can be done by courier service or e-mail.
The application for the research permit renewal should be submitted in two (2) copies through the Head of the affiliating Institution, to reach the ;

This should be done at least three (3) months before the expiry of the permit.
The research permit renewal application forms must be accompanied by the following:-
(a) A comprehensive progress report and a justification for continuation of Project (two (2) copies).
(b) A letter from the sponsor (two (2) copies)
(c) A letter from the affiliating institutions supporting the application for renewal.
Payment of a renewal fee to the NCST will be required before a research permit is renewed.
Therefore make payments of renewal as required. Payment details have been given in our “Fees section”

Attach the payment receipt to the application document before submission.
You should note that; a research permit may be renewed for a period not exceeding one year at any one time for short term projects of a duration not exceeding 3 years, and two years for long term projects exceeding 3 years.
Once you have made the submission, wait for official communication from the Head of Research Division, NACOSTI. The review process can take at least one month to complete.
If the review is successful, you will be granted with an extension for your research.

Apply online

Application for a Research Permit extension can be done online through the National Commission for Science Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI) online platform. https://oris.nacosti.go.ke/index.php
Visit the online platform https://oris.nacosti.go.ke/index.php and log in into your account.


This the account you used to make the application for the research permit.
On your dashboard click on the “Apply permit Icon” and apply for an extension of the existing research project.
Fill in the required details and upload the following documents;
(i). Details of the amount of funds at the commencement of project
(ii). Outstanding balance
(iii). Research details
(iv). Upload a comprehensive progress report and a justification for continuation of Project
(v). Upload a letter from the sponsor
(vi). Upload a letter from the affiliating institutions supporting the application for renewal.
After you have provided the required details a verification email will be sent to your email address with payment details.
Log in to your email address to view your payment details. The amount of fee payable depends on the type of permit you want (level of education), the institution you are representation ad your residency status.

Make payment using either of the above accounts. Your will receive a confirmation email acknowledging your payment once the payment is received.
Log in to check your research extension permit application status in your dash board.
Your will receive a prompt email once your research permit is ready. This normally takes a period of two weeks.
You can print your research extension permit from your dashboard once its ready.

Eligibility

Students, Private individuals, Public Institutions or Private Institutions; either Kenyan or Non-Kenyan carrying out research in Kenya and are in need of an extension of their research period are eligible to make an application.
One should possess a valid/ expired research permit to apply for an extension.

Reason for extension

Need for the Document

Research extensions will enable you to continue to carry out your research, once the validity of your research permit elapsed.
Section 17 (1) of the Science, Technology and Innovation Act, 2013 requires all persons intending to undertake research in the country to apply to the Commission for the grant of a Research Licence. Research refers to any investigation or inquiry or interview that aims to collect data or information, academic or non-academic that will lead to new information and/or knowledge.
It’s illegal to undertake/ or continue undertaking research in Kenya without a valid research license.

Information which might help

Applicants must submit a completed Form C http://www.mpala.org/documents/Research_Permits_2_1014121714.pdf research extension three months before the expiry of the permit.
A renewal fee is supposed to be paid shall be paid.
A research permit may be renewed for a period not exceeding one year at any one time for short term projects of a duration not exceeding 3 years, and two years for long term projects exceeding 3 years.

The License is valid for the proposed research, site and specified period.
Both the License and any rights thereunder are non-transferable.
NACOSTI may monitor and evaluate the research.
The Licensee shall report to relevant government offices in the area of research before commencement
Excavation, filming and collection of specimens are subject to further permissions from relevant government agencies.
The License does not give authority to transfer research materials.
The Licensee shall submit one hard copy and upload a soft copy of their final report within one year of completion of the research.
NACOSTI reserves the right to modify the conditions of the License including its cancellation without prior notice.
